Went to the movies again today, this time to see Jack the Giant Slayer.
You all know the story. Jack trades his cow horse for a handful of magic beans. His mother uncle gets mad at him for doing such a stupid thing and throws the beans out the window. During the night As soon as the beans get wet, a giant beanstalk grows, which Jack climbs to see what’s at the top to save the princess who was sheltering in his house, said house now being at the TOP OF THE BEANSTALK.
Okay, changes were made. But who knows what really happened. Only Jack and the Giants, and they’re not around to tell us what is truth and what is fairy tale. In fact, the lines blurring truth from fairy tale are actually a part of the story the movie tells. (BTW, that’s Stanley Tucci in the pic above, playing the treacherous Roderick. See the HAIR??)
It stars Obi-Wan Kenobi Ewan McGregor. Well, he’s not the star, some kid named Nicolas Hoult as Jack, and some chickie called Eleanor Tomlinson as the runaway princess.
Hoult is not ‘some kid’, not really. He was the boy in About A Boy, which I loved, and as an adult he’s played in X-Men:First Class and Clash of the Titans. I must admit I’ve never seen anything Eleanor Tomlinson has been in, but she was in a couple of episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures, so that gives her Doctor Who cred. And she was also in Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, which I’ve neither read nor seen, but has one of the better titles of anything.
BUT. Obi-Wan Ewan McGregor plays Elmont, the King’s Protector, but don’t tell me he isn’t channeling the Force. He managed to get the line in. You know the line. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” Made me smile.
And he WAS rolled in pastry, which I have to admit, is a fantasy I never knew I had until I saw it.
So, go see it. It’s not Oscar material, but it was a fun romp. An adventure, and we should all be looking for a good adventure!
Rolled in pastry…see, now you’re thinking it, too, aren’t you?

I also really enjoyed this film. It isn’t great, but it is a solid fairytale adaptation. I have attached my review if you are interested: http://vlizz.com/2013/03/04/jack-the-giant-killer-review-singer-hult-tucci-and-mcgregor-make-a-fairytale-winner-with-subpar-cgi/
